Cannabidiol (CBD) is becoming increasingly popular, and pharmacists need to be aware of these products in order to provide effective consultation to patients. In France, laws and regulations related to the Convention on Biological Diversity are formulated at the governmental and European level. Unapproved CBD products are not regulated and may contain dangerous chemicals. The pharmacist should advise patients where and how to obtain the product and verify the CBD and delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol content of the product.

CBD has many drug interactions and should be evaluated by a pharmacist. CBD has the most promising prospects for the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy, and further research is needed to evaluate its use in other indications. Sativex is currently available in France to treat spasms associated with multiple sclerosis and schizophrenia. In general, more research on CBD is needed.

Cannabidiol products in pharmacies

In France you can’t buy your CBD flowers or oils yet, only two cannabidiol based medicines are available:

  • The Epidolex
  • Sativex

For the rest of the CBD products, we will have to wait.

Indications for CBD oil

With the increase in consumer demand in France, the number of studies on the therapeutic effects of CBD has increased. However, the studies carried out are insufficient; large randomized, placebo-controlled trials must be conducted. CBD is the most promising for the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy. There is limited evidence regarding the use of CBD to treat psychotic symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and public speaking anxiety. CBD has not been proven to be effective in treating pain, nausea or depression. On the other hand, THC is considered effective in these situations because it has a different mechanism of action. THC activates CB1 and CB2 receptors in the brain, unlike CBD. As mentioned earlier, unlike THC, CBD has no mental effects. I think these differences may explain the different uses of CBD and THC7,8.
